Ripple: The Paper Lamp

Inspired by the nautilus shell and succulents, this lamp is a dynamic source of ambient light. The soft curves match the soft rays of light emitted from this decorative tabletop decor. The staggered strips create a harmonious and calming shadow when the light is turned on.

Challenge

One constraint given was to place an emphasis on an interlocking ability or mechanism that held parts of the lamp together as opposed to relying directly on adhesives. This is what led to the deep dive in how nature builds: using progressive rhythm. Overlaying the strips of paper not only increased their strength but created the balance necessary to build the overhang with minimal amounts of adhesive. The second constraint was to skip the sketching phase and immediately engage with the paper to explore its materiality.
